Low dielectric loss thermoplastics materials (8 and 10) are fusion welded using dielectric heating by interposing between the surfaces a mterial (12) having a high dielectric loss which, when the assembly is placed in a high frequency electric field, is heated and softens the adjacent layers to allow them to fusion weld. Welding polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene. Dielectric welding produces neat smooth welds but cannot normally be used with low loss plastics materials. |
