The fluidised-bed rotary furnace has a cylindrical drum (11) which can be rotated about an essentially horizontal axis and in which a sand bed (15) is provided. By means of drive devices (41-43) a relatively slow rotary movement of the drum (11) is produced, in order to produce convection in the sand bed (15) in the way of a fluidised bed. Ignition devices (22) for igniting the wastes to be fed in through the inlet port (28) of the drum (11), and the gases liberated therefrom by pyrolysis are provided. The furnace further has collection devices (13) for collecting top gas and combustion residues at the outlet port (29) of the drum (11). The fluidised-bed rotary furnace is suitable for economical and environmentally safe disposal of wastes, such as waste products of the wood industry, oil residues from ships, paper wastes contaminated with pathogens and the like from hospitals, and other wastes whose disposal presents similar problems. <IMAGE>
