The mechanical seal serves to seal off a rotating shaft (1) relative to a fixed end member. It has two floating sealing elements (3, 4) sliding one upon the other, each of which comprises two coaxial sliding-contact rings (5, 6 and 7, 8 respectively) separated from one another by annular spaces. One sealing element (3) rotates with the shaft (1) while the other sealing element (4) is connected in a fixed manner to the end member. At least one of the surfaces (30, 31; 24) bounding one (9) of the annular spaces on the two rotating sliding-contact rings (5, 6) and on a flange (15), respectively, of the shaft is provided with projections (23, 32) for the purpose of generating a flow (S) of liquid in the region of the opening (21) of a fixed tube (20) which projects into the annular spaces. This produces forced circulation of the sealing and cooling liquid, making it possible to dispense with a separate circulating pump. <IMAGE>
