The voltage tester indicates the voltage and possibly its polarity. It consists of two handles with contact points, connected by a cable. One of them has optical display elements with a current limiting series resistor. At least two display stages (A1-An) are connected to the current limiting resistor (Ro), each consisting of at least one resistor (R) and an optical display element (O). They respond to different voltage values and are arranged in the order of selected voltage ranges. The optical display elements may be incandescent lamps, light diodes, or liquid crystal elements, and may be connected with non-linear elements such as diodes or Zener diodes.
