The invention relates to a method for the continuous gasification of solid and/or fluid carbon-containing and/or hydrocarbon-containing substances in molten iron in a reaction vessel, means for carrying out the method and the use of the gas obtained. Previously lances used to introduce reactive ingredients have had to have been introduced from above and through the thick layer of slag. As well, they have had to have been replaced frequently because of chemically and mechanically induced breakages. In the present invention the reactants are introduced from below the surface of the melt through nozzles mounted in the refractory lining of the vessel. As well, because there are no lances being continuously replaced, gas-tight vessels may be used and relatively pure gases may be collected from the vessel's interior.
