[Also in Divisions D1, C3 and B5] Glass fibres are rendered compatible with epoxy resins by coating them with an epoxy resin compatible copolymer of an unsaturated alkoxy silane compound with an unsaturated organic monomer containing an epoxy resin reactive group. The unsaturated alkoxy silane may be vinyl triethoxysilane, vinyl tris-betamethoxy-ethoxy silane, gamma-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane, vinyl tri methoxy silane or vinyl triacetoxy silane and the unsaturated copolymerisable monomer may be acrylic or methacrylic acid, diethylene or dipropylene glycol itaconate or vinyl alcohol and copolymerisation may be effected in the presence of a free radical catalyst, e.g. methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, benzoyl peroxide or cyclohexanone peroxide, u.v. light or atomic radiation. Glass filaments may be coated as they are drawn from the bushing or a heat cleaned glass fibre mat or cloth may be dipped in the coating composition. The copolymer may be applied in the form of a liquid or as a solution or emulsion in a suitable liquid, e.g. water, acetone, ethanol, methanol, or a water/alcohol mixture. |
