In a machine tool having a tool changing device that includes means for holding a toolholder in a predetermined angular position, the chuck spindle is rotatably adjusted to a predetermined angular position to align driving keys on the spindle with recesses on the tool holder during a tool change operation. The chuck spindle carrying the driving keys is rotatably adjusted by means of a fluid pressure operated cylinder 49 moving a double helical cam 52 on to a sleeve 56 carrying a roller 53. The sleeve is thereby rotated until the roller 53 reaches a terminal seating (55) (Fig. 4, not shown), the sleeve acting through shaft 57, 33 and gear train 35, 36 and 37 to drive the splined end 38 of the chuck spindle. The roller 53 is mounted on a pin 54 that extends into a helical groove in the shaft 57 and the sleeve 56 is spring biased so that should the roller 53 engage with the very tip of the cam surfaces 52 it will be pushed to one side thereof. |
