The slag formed in the reactor flows over a sill and through a long gutter in which it is exposed to at least one vertical stream of O2 or gas contg. O2. The O2 travels with great force in a ring shaped stream through >=1 nozzle, and causes a depression in the surface of the slag and a convection system between the gas stream and the molten slag. The convection system has a dimension at 90 degrees to the gas stream of 2-5, pref. 3 times the dia. of the depression and a depth of halt the dia. of the depression. The pref. plant includes a gutter contg. a row of three enlarged wells, and a vertical O2 lance is located above each well. The gutter pref. forms a monolithic unit with the reactor, and can be filted to control slag flow through the gutter. Used for slag produced in the gasification of coal.
