PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound useful as a compounding base of perfumes in high yield and purity in short steps industrially advantageously, starting from 3,7-dimethyl-1-octen-3-ol-5-one via a novel intermediate. CONSTITUTION:3,7-Dimethyl-1,6-octadien(or 1-octen)-3-ol-5-one of formula I: (the bond in formula II is C-C double or single bond) is hydrogenated to give novel 3,7-dimethyl-1,6-octadiene(or 1-octene)-3,5-diol of formula III, which is subjected to ring closure in the presence of an acid catalyst to form (dihydro) nerol oxide of formula IV. Alternatively, a compound of formula III wherein the formula II is double bond is dehydrated in the presence of an acid catalyst to afford 3,7-dimethyl-1,5,7- octatrien-3-ol of formula V. The resulting compound is once isolated and subjected to ring closure to form the objecteve compound. The compound of formula V is a novel one and used as a durable flavoring agent or modifier. |
