PURPOSE:To automatically detect a defect portion of an optical fiber, obtd. by drawing, by setting a defect detector on the way to a coiling drum. CONSTITUTION:A glass base material is heat softened and drawn to obtain optical fiber 10. Fiber 10 is fed into defect detector 20, where it is introduced between pulleys 24, 25 set in water 22 in container 21 through pulley 23. Ultrasonic waves are emitted toward fiber 10 from ultrasonic sending and receiving type flaw detection element 27, and element 27 receives ultrasonic waves reflected from ultrasonic reflection plate 28 to detect a defect portion of fiber 10. Fiber 10 is then introduced into a dryer through pulley 26, dried, and coiled round a coiling drum. |
