[Also in Division C3] Coatings on paper, textiles &c are obtained by applying a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of a resin containing at least 50% by weight of units of at least one ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid and, optionally, units of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, the said composition also containing a water-soluble alkali metal silicate wherein the weight ratio of silicic acid (calculated as SiO 2 ) to alkali metal (calculated as Na 2 O) is at least 2.5:1 and the weight ratio of silicic acid (calculated as SiO 2 ) to resin is at least 0.228:1. The (meth)acrylic ester component of the resin, is preferably an alkyl ester having at least 3 carbon atoms in the alkyl group. To provide full-matt finishes, the compositions can include an inorganic pigment or delustering agent, e.g. barium sulphate or silica gel, optionally together with a dispersing agent therefor, e.g. ammonium polyacrylate. The compositions are particularly useful in providing coatings for washable wallpapers and for textile surfaces which can be washed, e.g. as in lampshades, upholstery, rigid furniture surfaces and wallcoverings. |
