1309303 Olefin copolymerization SOLVAY & CIE 30 Nov 1970 [1 Dec 1969] 56704/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division C1] Elastomeric olefin copolymers are obtained by carrying out the polymerization in a liquid reaction medium constituted by one of the monomers, using a catalyst comprising (a) an organometallic compound and (b) the product of reducing a liquid halide of a transition metal of group IVa, Va or VIa in a valency state of at least 4, e.g. TiCl 4 or VCl 4 , with a liquid organometalic compound (which may be the same as (a)) in the presence of a porous inert support material-and in the absence of any liquid diluent. The reduction is carried out by impregnating the support with one of the reactants then, at a temperature below 0‹ C., slowly adding -the other, the pore space of the support being sufficient in relation to the volume of the reactants to ensure that the mixture remains pulverulant. Suitable support materials include SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , MgO, TiO 2 , CaCO 3 , Na 2 SO 4 , silicates of magnesium or aluminium and porous polymers; particularly preferred supports are in the form of rounded bodies of diameter 50-250 Á composed of agglomerated particles, the individual particles having diameter 0À2- 2 Á. The preparation of a support of the latter type from hydroxyapatite and calcium fluoride is described. The examples describe the copolymerization of ethylene and propylene indiquid propylene using catalysts prepared by reducing TiCl 4 with Et 3 Al in the presence of various support materials and activating the products with (i-Bu) 3 Al, (hexyl) 3 Al or Et 2 AlCl. |
