PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound having two or more mercapto groups in one molecule usable for cold wave and hair setting agent, by reducing keratin with a sulfide in an alkaline region, and by hydrolyzing the reduction product with enzymes. CONSTITUTION:Keratin is reduced in an aqueous mercaptan or sulfide, adjusted to the alkaline region of pH 8-11, at 0-40 deg.C. The reaction mixture is then filtered in vacuo, and the filtrate is concentrated, dialyed, then hydrolyzed with enzymes, e.g. pepsin or bromelin, to give keratin hydrolyzate (H). The average molecular weight of (H) is adjusted to 2,000-20,000 to give two or more mercapto groups in one molecule. The mercapto groups are oxidized wit oxygen to combine with mercapto groups in other molecules via cystine bonds. The high polymer films thus formed permit suitable wave effects for a long time without damaging the hair. |
