PURPOSE:To oxidize and reduce two kinds of organic compounds at the same current supply quantity by putting the organic compound solution having the functional groups to be reduced and the organic compound solution having the functional groups to be oxidized in cathode and anode chambers respectively and yet electrolyizing the same through the use of the specific cation exchange membrane as diaphragm. CONSTITUTION:An organic compound (e.g., maleic acid) solution having the functional groups to be reduced and an organic compound (e.g., ethyl butyrate, beene, etc.) solution having the functional groups to be oxidized are put in cathode and anode chambers respectively and are electrolyzed by using the undermentioned cation exchange membrane as a diaphragm. Namely, the membrane whose cationic functional groups exist evenly in the range of not allowing the resistance of the membrane to increase (e.g., the exchange membrane in which polyethylene imine is fixed through covalent bonding by way of sulfonic groups) namely, at the upper surface of anion exchange membrane, praticularly at the contact side to anolyte. |
