In a twin-shaft furnace, alternately the one shaft is a combustion shaft and the other shaft is a counter-current shaft. In the combustion shaft (1) fuel is introduced by means of burners (5) at the end of a preheater zone (V), and the mineral raw material is burned in a burning zone (B). The exhaust gases arising (6) flow upwards into the counter-current shaft (2), heat the raw material situated in the shaft, and escape through an outlet (7). The burned raw material passes through a downstream deacidification zone (N) and thereafter a cooling zone (K), in which it is cooled by cooling air (10) blown in from below. After removal of dust, the heated cooling air is passed either directly into a raw material preheater (14) or is used completely or partially for heating the combustion air in a recuperator (15). <IMAGE>
