Piston ring for IC engines, esp. diesel engines - has plasma sprayed coating contg. alumina and titanium di:oxide and reducing the wear of cast iron cylinder liners

The running surface of the ring is coated by a plasma jet with an oxide-ceramic contg. by wt. 25-34.9% TiO2, 60% min. of alumina, 5.5% max. of other oxides, and ca. 3% organic binder. The piston ring is pref. used in conjunction with a cylinder linear made of grey cast iron with a high phosphorus content, esp. min. 0.15wt.% of phosphorus. The new coatings (I) have a hardness of ca. 1250 HV 0.05 and excellent corrosion resistance; they are also less expensive than metal coatings and reduce the wear of the linears.
