A float switch has mechanical switching elements in the housing linked to the control circuit of a pump via a cable. It has a switching weight, which will alter the centre of gravity as a result of changes in the level of the liquid being monitored. The switching weight (10) is attached to one end of a rod (11), which pivots about a fixed point (13). The rod acts like a pendulum and travels through a given angle to actuate the lever (19) of a switch (14). The pivoting point is below the centre of gravity of the rod.
