FORMING RANDOM PATTERNS ON WEBS

A liquid, e.g. a dye moving as a transverse film or curtain onto an advancing web 1 is provided with a pattern by directing one or more air jets thereagainst from a rotatable and horizontally reciprocable tube 11 also extending transversely of web 1 and provided with apertures 21 connected to a compressed air supply 20. The air jets may act upon a uniform film 22 sliding down a doctor blade 6, or on a curtain of liquid dropping from the blade. The position of the tube and the height of free fall of liquid are adjustable.
