In the manufacture of metallurgical coke, partic. for use in a blast furnace by the known technique of producing briquettes of size less than that reqd. in the final product from fine non-coking coal mixing the raw briquettes so produced with fine coking coal and thereafter carbonishing the mixt., the improvement whereby all or a major part of the briquetted material consists of a coal or mixt., of coals with a crucible Swelling Index of 0-5.
