PURPOSE:To impart temp. sensitivity and to attempt to improve fiber-forming and film-forming properties, by graft-copolymerizing a specified (meth)acrylamide deriv. etc., onto a polyvinyl alcohol polymer. CONSTITUTION:One or more N-alkylene-substd. (meth)acrylamides of formula I and II [wherein R1 is H or CH3; R2 is R1 or C2H5; R3 is CH3, C2H5 or C3H7; A is -(CH2)n- (wherein n is 4-6), -(CH2)2-O-(CH2)2-] and another monomer copolymerizable therewith [e.g., a hydrophilic monomer such as acrylamide, an ionic monomer such as (meth)acrylic acid, or a hydrophobic monomer such as N,N-di-n-propylacrylamide] are added in a homogeneous system wherein polyvinyl alcohol is dissolved in an aq. solvent as a medium and graft copolymn. thereof is performed in an inert gas atmosphere by using a redox initiator to obtain a polyvinyl alcohol graft copolymer having an MW of 500-6,000, wherein said (meth)acrylamide, etc., are graft-copolymerized. |
