Filter comprises a hollow body with a slot into which a sliding member can be inserted and withdrawn. The sliding member is fitted with a filter element which is made operable by inserting the sliding member. The member is a push fit in the slot so that the assembly is made leakproof simply by insertion of the member. The member pref. has an O-ring on each of its opposite faces, around the element. The O-rings provide a leakproof seal between the sliding member and the filter body. When the sliding member is inserted in the body it pref. provides a restricted by-pass in parallel to the passage through the filter element. The body is pref. made of a transparent plastic such as nylon so that the element can be viewed through the body. Filter is used specifically to detect clots in milk flowing through a pipeline, esp. from a milking machine, so that clotting problems can be related to specific animals. It is easily fitted in individual lines of a milking machine. Clotting can be observed through the body without withdrawing the filter element. Milk can continue to flow even when the element is completely blocked.
