PURPOSE:To prepare the title compound in high purity and yield, useful as a modifier of polyethylene, by reacting 4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl) phenol with sulfur monochloride, at specific temperature conditions, in a suspended state, and separating the objective compound easily from the reaction mixture. CONSTITUTION:The compound of formula is prepared by reacting (2moles of) 4- (1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl) phenol with (pref. 1mole of) sulfur monochloride, pref. in the presence of a catalytic amount of a Lewis acid, in an organic solvent (0.5- 1.0, pref. about 2-5vol.parts per 1wt.part of the phenol), especially an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic saturated hydrocarbon such as butane or pentane, in a suspended state, at -10-40 deg.C. |
