The spindle (1) is a machine tool spindle with a large free protruding length. Between its end mountings (6, 7) in the spindle sleeve (2), the spindle shaft (8) has a flexible section (14). In the region of this section (14), the spindle shaft (8) is supported radially in elastic and damping fashion relative to the spindle sleeve (2) by means of intermediate bearings (9). This eliminates static over provision (redundancy) and, by altering the elasticities and/or the damping range, adaptation to the various vibration conditions in different speed ranges is achieved without structural modifications. In addition, subsequent alteration of the setting is possible by virtue of this design. The spindle (1) can furthermore be constructed easily and cheaply and is easy to control during the machining process. <IMAGE>
