A combined safety and release valve, esp. for steam circuits in nuclear power stations, includes a steam ejector on the pressure space of the piston-type valve. The space between inlet nozzle and outlet nozzle of the ejector communicates with the pressure space. The ejector outflow is divided by a solenoid valve from an expansion chamber. Apart from its function as a safety valve in case of excessive pressure, this can act as a release valve to operate at pressure as low as 1 bar. Excessive pressures cannot cause damage because of the built-in damping features.
