A row of plates or tiles is pushed stepwise through a chamber fitted with nozzles via which streams of sand or other materials are used for the sand- or shot- blasting of the surfaces of the tiles; and the direction and/or intensity of the streams is varied according to a program so patterns are produced on the surfaces of the tiles. In an embodiment, the tiles stand vertically on edge on a conveyor, so they travel through a chamber fitted on both side walls with horizontal and vertical rows of blasting nozzles; and a template is located on each side of the tiles so the streams of sand must pass through the two templates. By adjusting the direction and/or the intensity of the sand streams, a different pattern can be obtd. on each tile.
