1282714 Door closers ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO Ltd 25 July 1969 [1 Aug 1968] 36666/68 Heading E2M A door closer, in which the rotary motion imparted by the opening of a door to a shaft is converted by rack and pinion movement into a linear displacement of a piston working in hydraulic fluids has a sintered metal pinion. The centre-region of the shaft may have a non-circular cross-sectional shape, the region passing through a similarly shaped hole in the pinion, which may be secured to the shaft by adhesive. The shaft may have a polygonal cross-sectional shape throughout its length. In the closer shown hexagonal shaft 14 is supported in housing 10 by flanged nylon bearings 16, and carries pinion 18 engaging rack 20 fitted with piston 22, abutting closing springs 24, and piston 26 which hydraulically damps door-closing movement. The bearings may be made of polytetrafluoroethylene. In an alternative closer a sealing ring is interposed between the pinion and the flanged end of each bearing. The shaft, pinion and bearings may form a symmetrical assembly, and the closer housing may be symmetrical about perpendicular bisecting planes. |
