1415499 Coking; destructive hydrogenation USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 1 Nov 1972 [2 Nov 1971] 50428/72 Heading C5E Coal is carbonized and desulphurized by contacting a mixture of coal and coke in a fluidized bed with a gas containing hydrogen at 950‹ to 1500‹ F. and 30 to 3000 p.s.i.a. The gas contains not less than 20 mol. per cent of hydrogen and no more than 2% by volume of H 2 S and is substantially free of oxygen; part of the gaseous product may be freed of H 2 S and recycled to provide this gas. Similarly, the coke in the fluidized bed may be a recycled portion of the coke product, which contains no more than 1% of sulphur, though the coal fed contains at least 1À1% of sulphur (1À9% in the example). The fluidizing gas may contain water vapour. The gas product may be worked up by first cooling it to separate oils, then scrubbing to remove CO 2 and H 2 S, which may be recovered conventionally, then sending part to recycle and further cooling the rest. This is then scrubbed to remove ammonia and cooled to remove first light oils, ethane, ethylene and acid gases, and then as a second fraction most of the methane. The first fraction can be fractionated conventionally to separate ethylene; the methane can be reformed with steam; and the residual gas (H 2 and CO with some methane) can be "shifted" with steam and the CO 2 so obtained then scrubbed out to leave hydrogen containing a small proportion of methane. A heavy oil may be fed to the carbonizing step with the coal and coke.
