In applying coloured mixts. of optically active substance and tacky component, for the decorative coating of a glassy surface and bonding of it to another flat element, a pigment or optically active substance is suspended or dissolved in an adhesive. This suspension or soln. is first used for painting or other treatment of a surface, then the transparent glass element is combined with the second flat element by pressure. The coatings are not sensitive to bacterial or other degradation. The two layers are bonded firmly together. The glassy surface may be of silicate glass or a transparent synthetic, e.g. polycarbonate, PMMA, polystyrene or glass-clear PVC. The second layer may be of a nonwoven fabric, leather, a PVC film or a metal foil, or may be of the same material as the glassy surface.
