In or for a lead-acid battery, active material for its negative and/or positive plate(s) includes electro-conductive whiskers affording high degree of direct connection between active material particles and to base plate material. Electro-conductive whiskers are disclosed of at least one type selected from carbon, graphite and titanate with diameter of 10 mu m or less, aspect ratio of 50 or more, and a specific surface area of 2 m<2>/g, in amounts of 0.01 to 10 weight percent of the active material.
