The device consists of tubular holder in which a double-pointed needle is inserted. The inner part is surrounded by a collapsible elastomer tube with a piercable end. The blood extraction tube which can be pushed into the open end of the holder is closed by a plug which is pierced by the needle after it has pierced the end of the elastomer tube. This provides a simple means of checking whether or not the needle is inserted into a vein or in the surrounding tissue.
