The machine for digging vertical shafts in the ground has a cutting head (8) with helical cutting picks (17) mounted a sloping radial cutter (18) also with helical picks (26) which excavate the outer periphery. The central head (8) is mounted at the bottom of a screw conveyor (9) inside a tube, so that material cut by both cutters is conveyed upwards. The tube passes through a lower platform (2) and an upper platform (11) for discharge sideways through an outlet (12) above the upper platform into a lifting bucket (13) for discharge outside. The drive motor (16) is at the top of the conveyor, driving it through a hollow shaft and the central cutter (8) is driven by a shaft inside this hollow shaft.
