and polyvinyl aromatic hydrocarbons are prepd. by reacting the corresponding chloro- or bromomethyl gp. contg. aromatic cpds. Ar (CH2-X)n (where Ar is an aromatic, mono- or polynuclear or condensed ring hydrocarbon, X is Cl or Br and n is 2-6) with triphenylphosphine and then with an aq. HCHO soln. Pref. starting materials are 1,4-bis-(chloromethyl) benzene, 1,5-bis(chloromethyl)naphthalene, tri(chloromethyl) anthraces and tetra-(chlorometh)-diphenyl. Prods. are obtd. in high yields without isomeration and are pure.
