In the prepn. of functional gp. -contg. styrenes by reacting ClCH2- or BrCH2-contg. aromatic cpds. with PPh3 and then with HCHO, the starting cpds. are of formula (I). (where R1 is H, OH, OMe or alkyl; R2 is CHO or OH and X is Cl or Br), and are esp. 5-chloromethyl-salicyl-aldehyde or alcohol. Pure styrenes contg. OH or CHO gps. are obtd. in high yields, without isomerisation.
