摘要 <p>A right-angled, isosceles prism of glass is fixed in a stable section of an instrument housing. It has a glass fibre optical, input conductor coupled to one short face so as to deliver light to it, and a glass fibre, optical, output conductor coupled to the other short face for transporting light away from it. A membrane which can be set in vibration by sound waves is supported in the housing parallel to the hypotenuse surface of the prism. Pref. the membrane is held at its edges in a silicone ring attached to the housing. At rest the membrane is at a distance away from the prism equal to or less than the wave length of the light to be modulated, and its surface, at least in the zone of the hypotenuse of the prism, is transparent or absorbent to light. The modulator widens the range of application of optical conductors in telephonic systems and makes it possible to convert an acoustic signal directly into an optical signal.</p>
