In order to improve their wetting, dispersing, and penetrating properties and to improve the conveyance of the effective substances present, the esters of tetrahydrofurfuralcohol with aliphatic carboxylic acids containing not more than five carbon atoms are added to dispersions of liquids insoluble in water, and to solutions, plastic preparations and dispersions of fats, waxes, resins, highly polymeric hydrocarbons or carbohydrates, e.g., rubber, guttapercha, cellulose, polysaccharides and cellulose esters, camphor and esters serving as plasticising agents for lacquers, e.g., triphenylphosphate, tricresylphosphate, dibutyltartrate, diethylphthalate, glyceroltriacetate and adipic and methyladipicalkylesters. The insoluble liquids specified are, hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, hydrogenated phenols, higher alcohols and ketones. The said esters of tetrahydrofurfuralcohol may advantageously be used with soaps, sulphonated oils, sulphonated higher alcohols, and aromatic sulphonic acids, e.g., in the preparation of solvent soaps. The preparation of the esters of tetrahydrofurfuralcohol with formic acid, acetic acid (using acetic anhydride) and n-valeric acid is described.
