A load transfer device comprises a platform 6, 7 which is insertable below and movable with a load 29. A plurality of lifting devices 8 to 11 arranged in at least one row below the platform 6, 7 raises and lowers the platform 6, 7. The lifting devices 8 to 11 are operable individually or in groups to vary the distance between a base 30 and the platform 6, 7. Sensing means 24 to 27 actuate a lifting device or group of lifting devices in such a way as to permit movement of the device from one floor level 30 to another shown as a lorry platform 31. As shown the lifting devices 8 to 11 are bellows operated by compressed air and air cushions 14 enable the platform 6, 7 to be moved. Water may be used instead of compressed air or the lifting devices may be mechanical, e.g. scissors, while the air cushions may be replaced by running wheels. <IMAGE> |
