The vehicle odometer includes an inductively coupled speedometer needle with a spring return, and two mechanically linked milometers. One provides a grand total miliage while the other is resettable to provide a partial mileage. Both have brakes to prevent their rotation except when driven. The speedometer needle has a spiral return spring arranged to unwind from a rest position as the needle is pulled around by the inductive linkage. The spacing between adjacent turns thus increases as force is applied.
