Within a cylinder (1), rotatably mounted on rollers, of the shaking installation there is a wall (21) arranged coaxially to the cylinder. The wall is provided with a multiplicity of openings and designed in such a way that it rotates simultaneously with the cylinder. Arranged on the inner side of the wall is a series of helical ribs (23) which project radially inwards. Arranged on the outer side of the wall and the inner side of the cylinder are vanes (24) which follow a helical path. The helical ribs run counter to the helices along which the vanes extend. Castings are introduced into the cavity surrounded by the wall at the front end of the cylinder. By virtue of the rotary motion of the ribs, the castings are shaken together and moved towards the rear end of the cylinder. The sand which detaches itself from the castings falls through the openings in the wall into interspaces (22) between the vanes. The sand which has passed into the interspaces is conveyed to the front end of the cylinder by the vanes. By means of the above arrangement, the sand detached from the castings is separated immediately from the castings and can no longer hinder the operation of the arrangement. <IMAGE>
