1383393 Biphenylyloxy benzoyl compounds RAYCHEM CORP 15 Feb 1972 [16 Feb 1971 17 Jan 1972] 6947/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of general formula wherein R represents a hydroxy group, an alkoxy group containing from one to three C atoms or a halogen. The 4-(4-biphenylyloxy) benzoic acid monomer is preferably obtained by Ullmann condensation of p-hydroxybiphenyl and p-chlorotoluene to yield 4-(4<SP>1</SP>-biphenylylo x y) toluene, which is in turn subjected to cobalt acetate-catalyzed oxidation to form the product. Treatment of 4-(41-biphenylyloxy)benzoic acid with thionyl chloride yields the corresponding acid chloride, which in turn may be converted to the acid fluoride by reaction with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride. The acid ester monomers are obtained at reflux temperature by reaction of the corresponding acid chloride with the appropriate alcohol in the presence of triethylamine, or alternatively by sulphuric acid-catalyzed reaction of the alcohol and 4-(4<SP>1</SP>-biphenylyloxy) benzoic acid at reflux. The corresponding 3<SP>1</SP> and 2<SP>1</SP> monomers are similarly obtained starting from commercially available 3-hydroxybiphenyl and 2-hydroxybiphenyl respectively. |
