In automatic door closers with a braking piston (4) to be displaced counter to the effect of a closer spring (11) by a closer shaft (6), the braking piston can be detained hydraulically in the direction of closing movement when a predetermined door-opening angle is exceeded. This purpose is served by a valve tube (13) which is provided between the braking piston (4) and a closing body (3) located at the closer end of the closer housing (1) and which is connected to one or other of the last-mentioned parts (4, 3) and, in interaction with a valve channel (17) present in the closing body (3), can prevent the flow-off of oil from the pressure side (9, 15) of the piston (4) to its pressureless side (21). To keep the holding or release forces of the hydraulic stop device constant irrespective of the particular braking-piston detention position, the valve tube (13) is mounted displaceably in one of the two parts (for example, 4) and is supported by a compensating spring (14) which makes it possible to press the end face (13'), which can be loaded with oil pressure, of the valve tube (13) against an annular gasket (18) present in the other part (for example, 3) on its end face. <IMAGE>
