HEAT TREATMENT OF PARTICULATE SOLID MATERIALS

In the heat treatment or cooking of particulate solids material it is often desired to separate the solids from the cooking liquid within the vessel, to draw off the liquid and then add a sauce or other liquid to be blended with the solids material. When a rotary tumbling vessel (1) is to be used for heat treatment and blending, the separation may be achieved in accordance with the invention, by the use of a strainer (5) movable about its axis of rotation (5a) between an inoperative position illustrated in which the strainer (5) is clear of the wall of the vessel (1) at all stages of rotation of the vessel (1), and an operative position in which it engages the wall of the vessel, or a shelf (6) protruding therefrom, to retain the solids as the vessel rotates whole allowing the liquid to pass. The liquid may be drawn off by spray balls (8) carried by the strainer (5).
