PURPOSE:To obtain a novel polymer of high flexibility and formability, capable of giving fibers of high mechanical strength, thus useful as raw material for high-tenacity fibers, by reaction between an oxycarboxylic acid, specific dihydric phenol and diaryl carbonate. CONSTITUTION:(A) An oxycarboxylic acid of formula HO-Ar-COOH (Ar is of formula I, formula II, etc.) and/or its aryl ester, (B) a dihydric phenol of formula III (Ar' is of formula IV, etc.) (pref. 2,6-di(4-hydroxyphynoxy) benzonitrile) and (C) a diaryl carbonate (pref. diphenyl carbonate) are allowed to react to obtain the objective polymer constituted by recurring units of formula -(O-Ar-CO)-and of formula V, respectively, with a reduced viscosity [etasp/c] >=0.3dl/g determined in the form of a p-chlorophenol solution of a concentration 0.2g/de at 60 deg.C.
