PURPOSE:To provide a cylinder liner having a high strength, by forming the cylinder liner with three concentric layers, and by selecting a material for the middle layer, which has an elastic modulus greater than that of materials for the innermost and outermost peripheral layers. CONSTITUTION:A cylinder liner is formed of three layers. The layer 1 is made of cast iron which has a slidable characteristic, and the layer 2 is formed of steel having an elastic modulus which is greater than that of the layer 1. The middle layer 2 having the greater elastic modulus gives one kind of a skeleton effect so that a stress acting upon the outer periphery of the cylinder liner may be made to be less. Accordingly, it is possible to give a high strength to the cylinder, and thereby it is possible to aim at making the thickness of the liner thinner.
