The title pigments were prepd. by calcining residues of basic iron sulfate or jarosite 2-240 min. at 600-800≦̸C in SO2 vapor that the incompletely decompd. residue contained 0.6% Fe-bound S, and extracting water-sol. sulfates. Thus, a iron sulfate residue was calcined 30 min. at 750≦̸C in an atm. contg. 10% SO2, 25% O2 to give a product contg. water-sol. Fe 1.8, Fe-bound S 1.3%. This product was stirred 1hr with 1m3 H2O/500kg solids and filtered to give a filter cake, which was dried at 100≦̸C and ground to give a red pigment.
