At least one flange has terminals for wire ends. A wire guide moves between the flanges. A control device is operated by position pickups at the flanges, and has a turn counter. A number twice the number of turns in a layer is stored in a store. The number of turns still to be wound, shown by the turn counter is compared with the number in the store. When they coincide, a preparation signal is delivered, so that the comparison is made again when the wire guide approaches the flange with the terminal. When half the remaining turns shown on a second turn counter is wound, the wire guide is reversed.
