Oral compositions for treating prostatic hypertrophy consist of a hard capsule, compressed tablet or enteric coated formulation of a polyenic macrolide antibiotic or its N-acyl derivative or salt thereof, together with a carrier, the macrolide being candicidin, fungimycin, amphotericin B or hamycin or a compound having a nucleus containing 5 or 6 conjugated double bonds and having at least one hydroxy-substituent and at least one amino sugar, methyl, carboxy, carbonyl, aliphatic or hydroxy aliphatic substituent. The nucleus preferably has 26-37 ring atoms and may have other substituents. Suitable macrolides are: candidin, candidinin, candidoin, candicidin (syn. with trichomycin A, hamycin, heptamycin, ascosin and levorin A2), trichomycin B (levorin A3, hamycin component, PA-150) levorin A, hamycin, fungimycin (perimycin, aminomycin, 1968), amphotericin B, mycoheptin, levorin B, F-17-C, moldcidin A, fungichromin, filipin, durhamycin, lagosin (Glaxo- A246), eurocidin, pentamycin, Streptomyces sanguineus methyl pentaene, cabicidin, pentafungin, nystatin, rimocidin, chromin, amphotericin A, sistomycin, protocidin, etruscomycin (pucensomycin, 1163-FE), endomycin A (helixin A), pimaricin (tennecitin), 7071 RP, PA- 166, akitamycin, unamycin, Streptomyces gilvosporeus tetraene, tetrin, albonowisin (B-73), Streptomyces fungicidicus tetraene, AC-435, yunamycin, Streptomyces abikoensis heptaene, aureofacin, 757, ayfactin A, ayfactin B, antifungin 4915, eurotin A, AE-56, 2814-M, grubilin, monicamycin, Streptomyces yiridans antibiotics A, B, and C, mediocidin, endomycin B (helixin B), cryptocidin, flavacid, eurocidin (seligocidin), fungochromatin, aliomycin, capacidin, distomycin B, PA-153, 83, 90, 2814-P, Streptomyces effluvius pentaene, and A-228. Suitable coating materials are hard gelatin; wax with shellac; cellulose acetate phthalate with either a resin, tolubalsan and shellac, or fat-wax mixtures; plasticised cellulose acetate phthalate; shellac-castor oil; ammoniated shellac; shellac with stearic acid and tolu-balsam; or alternate coats of stearic acid-castor oil, and shellac-silica gel; acid phthalates of glucose or fructose; polyvinyl acid phthalate; styrene-methacrylic ester-butyl half-ester of maleic acid co-polymer; and shellac-alkyd resinunsaturated fatty acid mixtures. The materials are applied by conventional coating procedures. The invention includes a method for treating non-human animals for prostatic hypertrophy by administering orally the said compositions. |
