Threads (21) are wound around onto a warp beam (3) by the warping drum (1) of a cone warping machine. The warping drum (1) and/or the warp beam (3) are displaced laterally relative to one another according to the decreasing winding thickness by means of an electromotive travelling drive (7) which causes a traversing of the threads (21) running onto the warp beam (3). In order to adjust or to change the traversing in as fault-free a manner as possible before and during the winding round, a control voltage of the electromotive travelling drive (7) is heterodyned with an alternating voltage which is of adjustable amplitude and the frequency of which is determined as a function of the winding speed of the threads (21). <IMAGE>
