In a cooling tower of the type in which a fluid which can freeze at ambient temperatures and which flows in a freezing fluid-atmospheric air heat exchanger 3 is cooled in the latter by being placed in indirect contact with a flow of atmospheric air, there is provided an auxiliary circuit 14 of a fluid which cannot freeze at ambient temperatures, said auxiliary circuit comprising at least one heat source 9 to heat the non-freezing fluid and a non-freezing fluid-atmospheric air heat exchanger 2 disposed in the air flow upstream of the freezing fluid-atmospheric air heat exchanger to reheat the atmospheric air before its passage into the freezing fluid-atmospheric air exchanger 3. When the cooling tower is shut down on account of freezing weather, the exchanger 3 is emptied. To commence its operation without causing a freezing of the freezing liquid in the exchanger 3, the valve 13 is opened, the valves 7 and 8 remaining closed, and the pumps 6 and 15 are operated. The freezing fluid which reaches the exchanger 9 heats the non-freezing fluid of the auxiliary circuit 5 and the exchanger 2 raises the temperature of the air which passes through it, which in its turn heats the exchanger 3 which ultimately reaches a temperature sufficient to be supplied with freezing fluid. <IMAGE>
