The sleeping bag has a heat-retaining insert with a removable cover. Connecting members, e.g. slide fasteners are fastened to the transverse side edge and longitudinal side edges of the cover. This allows the cover to be readily removed and washed in a washing machine without the bulky contents. The cover can enclose the insert on all sides so that one slide fastener tape passes along the side edges up to the middle of one of the cross edges whilst the opening for removing the insert is along the whole of the other cross side.
