The granular material is of a density less than that of the liq. to be filtered. The bed occupies the upper part of a filter vessel and the top of the bed is above the surface level of liq. passing through the filter. The granular material of the bed is carried on support surfaces which are impermeable to the granular material but permeable to the liq. being filtered. One support surface is pref. a horizontal, perforated sheet. The granular material is pref. packed into removable containers which can be filter sacks, baskets, etc., suspended inside the vessel. The sacks can be of sail cloth with cord buckets on top to serve for suspension in the vessel as well as to facilitate removal and handling. Used in filtration of water or waste water partic. for the removal of oil pollution. Packaged bed material is easily removed for regeneration. Loose bed material cannot overspill to be carried away in the filtrate. |
